Rabat Discovery & Journey to Meknes
Your Moroccan adventure begins in Rabat, the elegant capital city where modern Morocco meets ancient heritage. After breakfast at your hotel, meet your professional driver-guide and begin exploring the city's most iconic landmarks.
Kasbah of the Udayas: Start at this 12th-century fortress overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Wander through the Andalusian Gardens, explore the narrow blue-washed streets reminiscent of Chefchaouen, and enjoy panoramic views of the Bouregreg River and neighboring Salé.
Hassan Tower: Visit this unfinished minaret, begun in 1195, which stands as a testament to the ambition of the Almohad dynasty. The red sandstone tower reaches 44 meters of its intended 86-meter height. Adjacent lies the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a masterpiece of modern Moroccan architecture housing the tombs of the late king and his sons.
Chellah Necropolis: Explore these ancient Roman and medieval ruins, once the thriving city of Sala Colonia. Walk among Roman remains, Islamic tombs, and gardens where storks nest atop ancient minarets.
After lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the river, depart Rabat and drive southeast through fertile agricultural lands toward Meknes. Arrive in the early evening and check into your riad within the medina walls. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and rest before tomorrow's imperial discoveries.
Meknes Imperial City & Volubilis Roman Ruins
After breakfast, dedicate the morning to exploring Meknes, the least visited of Morocco's imperial cities but arguably the most impressive in terms of monumental architecture. Founded by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, Meknes was designed to rival the great courts of Europe.
Bab Mansour: Begin at what many consider Morocco's most beautiful gate. This monumental entrance, completed in 1732, features intricate zellige tilework, carved cedar wood, and marble columns taken from the nearby Roman ruins of Volubilis.
Heri es-Souani: Visit the imperial granaries and stables, an engineering marvel designed to feed and house 12,000 horses. The massive vaults and sophisticated ventilation system demonstrate the ambition of Moulay Ismail's reign.
Moulay Ismail Mausoleum: Pay respects at the final resting place of the sultan who built Meknes. This is one of the few Moroccan shrines open to non-Muslims, featuring exquisite tilework and carved plaster.
After lunch, drive 30 kilometers to the ancient Roman city of Volubilis, Morocco's best-preserved archaeological site and a UNESCO World Heritage treasure. Walk along the Decumanus Maximus, the city's main street, and marvel at remarkably intact mosaics depicting mythological scenes. See the Triumphal Arch of Caracalla, the Capitol, and the Basilica while your guide brings ancient Roman life to vivid detail.
En route back, stop at Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, Morocco's holiest town and pilgrimage site, where the country's first Islamic dynasty was founded. The town's white-washed houses cascade down two hills surrounding the tomb of Moulay Idriss I. Return to Meknes for dinner and overnight.
Journey to Fes - The Spiritual Heart of Morocco
After breakfast, depart Meknes for the final leg of your journey to Fes, Morocco's cultural and spiritual capital. The short drive takes you through the fertile Saiss plain, where olive groves and agricultural fields stretch to the horizon.
Arrive in Fes and begin your exploration of this extraordinary city, founded in the 9th century and home to the world's largest living medieval medina. Fes el-Bali (Old Fes) is a UNESCO World Heritage site comprising over 9,000 narrow streets and alleys.
Bou Inania Madrasa: Visit this 14th-century theological college, considered the finest example of Marinid architecture in Morocco. Admire the intricate cedar woodcarvings, stucco work, and zellige tiles that cover every surface.
Al-Qarawiyyin University: View the exterior of the world's oldest continuously operating university, founded in 859 AD. The library houses priceless manuscripts including a 9th-century Quran.
Chouara Tannery: Witness the ancient art of leather-making at Fes's most iconic site. From surrounding terraces, observe the stone vessels filled with natural dyes where hides have been processed using medieval techniques for over a thousand years.
Medina Souks: Wander through the labyrinthine markets organized by craft - carpenters, metalworkers, spice merchants, and carpet sellers. Your guide will navigate the maze-like streets, sharing stories of Fes's rich trading heritage.
Conclude your tour with a panoramic view from the Merenid Tombs overlooking the medina. Your driver will transfer you to your chosen accommodation in Fes or the airport, marking the end of this imperial journey through Morocco's remarkable history.
