Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip from Marrakech
Atlas Mountains adventure to Morocco's highest cascades with Barbary macaque encounters
About This Trip
Leave Marrakech behind and ascend into the Middle Atlas to discover the Ouzoud Waterfalls — Morocco's most spectacular cascades, plunging 110 metres into a lush canyon of emerald pools and ancient olive groves. The landscape transforms from arid plains to cedar forests where Barbary macaques inhabit the cliff faces.
Descend the stone stairways to the waterfall's base, take an optional boat ride behind the curtain of water, and enjoy a traditional lunch on a cliffside terrace overlooking the falls before returning to Marrakech in the evening.

Frequently Asked Questions
The main trail involves approximately 1,000 stone steps descending to the waterfall base, equivalent to 30-40 floors. While the path is well-established, it is steep and uneven in sections. Moderate fitness is required. However, visitors with mobility limitations can enjoy spectacular views from the upper village rim without descending. We recommend sturdy walking shoes with grip—the mist from the falls makes stone surfaces slippery.
The Barbary macaques at Ouzoud are wild but generally habituated to humans. They are not aggressive but will attempt to steal food. We advise against feeding them (despite local vendors selling nuts) as this encourages aggressive begging behavior. Keep cameras and phones secure—the monkeys are adept at snatching items. Your driver will brief you on safe interaction protocols before the hike.
The traditional wooden boats (barques) are operated by experienced local fishermen who know the currents and wind patterns in the pool. The ride lasts 10-15 minutes and takes you into the mist zone behind the main cascade. Life jackets are typically available but not mandatory. The ride is weather-dependent—if water levels are too high after rains, boatmen will not operate. Cost is MAD 50-100 per person paid directly to the boatman.
At 110 meters, Ouzoud is Morocco's highest waterfall and one of the tallest in North Africa. Unlike the Ourika Valley (closer to Marrakech but smaller), Ouzoud features a three-tiered drop system, permanent rainbows in the mist, and the unique presence of Barbary macaques. The surrounding landscape of ancient olive groves and traditional grain mills creates a cultural context missing from more developed natural sites. The 3-hour drive from Marrakech also ensures fewer crowds than closer destinations.
Early departure serves three purposes: First, Barbary macaques are most active and visible in the cooler morning hours. Second, the morning light creates optimal conditions for photography and rainbow viewing in the mist. Third, Ouzoud has become increasingly popular with tour buses that arrive around 11:00 AM; our 11:00 AM arrival allows you to experience the base of the falls before the midday crowds and heat. Return to Marrakech by early evening avoids night driving on mountain roads.
